“Communitas” is the strong sense of solidarity and brotherhood that is born out of a shared adventure, an ordeal, a challenge or a mission.

What do Frodo and Sam (Fellowship of the Ring), Andy and Red (Shawshank Redemption), Forrest and Bubba (Forrest Gump), Maverick and Goose (Top Gun), and Woody and Buzz (Toy Story) all share in common?  Their devoted friendship was forged out of the intensity of their shared experience.  It’s what sociologists refer to as communitas.

Communitas is a group of men, emerging leaders who meet together over a twelve-month period for the purpose of mutual sharpening and enrichment. Our focus will be devotion to Christ, leaning into His calling, and preparing ourselves for His “next move” in our lives.

After forty years of ministry-service in the Body of Christ, I am deeply grateful for the leaders who have invested into my life and I value the privilege of investing into the lives of other leaders.  I resonate with the words of the Apostle Paul, “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine” (Romans 1:11-12). 

An Invitation For Prayerful Consideration

A new Communitas Cohort will be forming in September 2023. I would like to extend an invitation for you to share an adventure (perhaps an ordeal, certainly a challenge, and possibly a mission) with a handful of other men … leaders in process.  I am proposing an extended timeframe (12 months) where we meet as a group once each month (Zoom), as well as a 1 on 1 monthly meeting with me (24 encounters over 12 months).  Each group gathering would be for up to two hours, while the individual appointments would be an hour.

I am seeking God’s guidance for a life-giving balance of pre-selected content and spontaneous interaction.  I desire our time together to be substantive and relevant, timely and timeless.  Occasional written, reading, and creative assignments will be given to enhance our development.  Along the journey, some special guests will be invited to join us so that we might benefit from their experience and expertise. 

For each person who participates, I trust that God is already at work in a special way.  Part of the confirmation in your own spirit regarding your involvement with Communitas should be a sense that “this is exactly what I need.”
